Prayer of Disconnect

Deuteronomy 8:10-11 (NLT)
10  When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
11  “But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the LORD your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.

Gracious God,

I come desiring to be more fully present to and uninterrupted in my interactions with you and with others.

I understand that may require spending less or even at times unplugging from the world of cell phones and the web in order to be wholly present with you and with others.

Let me begin by spending my quiet time with you unplugged and uninterrupted from such distractions.

Move me to create more space in my life and schedule for face-to-face encounters with the people in my life and most importantly with you.

Grant me freedom the addiction, be it accidental or otherwise, to my cell phone, interest, video games and any other device that demands my attention.

Allow me the gift of presence so that I may truly sense you and honest attend to those to whom I speak.  AMEN

Having prayed this prayer…

Make it a habit to regularly unplug from your devices, especially when with others that you treasure.

Restrain your obsession to email but adhering to set times to check your emails and stay to it.  Turn off the notifications so you don’t look every time it sounds.

Reduce the amount of time you spend on digital recreation.

Do not include sensitive communications in digital communications and communicate those face-to-face if possible.

Have one no-email day a week such as the Lord’s Day.
