Prayer of Confession

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)
23  Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Redeemer,

I desire to surrender my weaknesses and faults to your forgiving love and shall intentionally see to embrace those spiritual practices that lead to transformation.

Open my heart, Spirit of God, to reveal to me what is true about me.  Within the safety of your love, I seek a path that shall lead to spiritual renewal and change from the old.

Remind me to keep close company with you, Lord, as you help me with how much or how little I change.

Let me think of myself with sober judgment being aware of my blind spots and taking care to place myself above the truth.

Grant me insight to the temptations that so easily beset me and equally to how much you are at work in my life.

No matter what I have done, let me see myself above all as your forgiven child living in thankfulness for your unmerited favor.

Stir my heart to ever savor your gift of salvation and your love that makes it possible.  AMEN

Having prayed this prayer…

Be aware of your natural propensity to rationalize, deny, blame or obsess about your sinful behavior.

Examine the ‘sin network’ in your life as evidenced by your presumptuous sins, besetting weakness, self-centered habits and broken relationships.

Work at replacing those sinful habits with healthy ones.

Be faithful in the practice of confessing your sins to God, a journal or a confidant who will help to hold you accountable.
