Prayer of Detachment

Mark 8:34-35 (MSG)
34  Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how.
35  Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self.

Divine Teacher,

I desire to nurture my spirit of trust I have in you alone.

Free me from those relationships that border on idolatry.  Purge me of the self-serving goals and agendas for success, money, power, ego and productivity and replace them with a wholehearted attachment to trust in you alone.

Allow me to allow others to lead, win and hold the limelight.

Suppress my obsession with image to look the right way, dress the right way and speak as the world would have me.

Release me from this fallacy that my money is my own and the sole result of my hard efforts.  Do so by empowering me to live on less that more.

Grant me the strength to trust the outcomes of my life to you rather than my own capabilities.

Indwell me fully so that I may honor the freedom of others; refusing to manipulate or control in order to get what I want.  AMEN

Having prayed this prayer…

Draw near to Jesus as you begin to let some things go in your life.

Actively resist the temptation to follow the image the world is trying to force upon you.

Be quick to repent and recenter your identity with Jesus.

Put your children, your family, your house, your money and your job in the proper perspective of priorities in your life.

Experience the freedom of God’s beloved by worrying less in your temporal security and more in your eternal security in Christ.

Accept that following Jesus includes descent, loss and even death to some things in life that you may live in a way that finds God in the midst of these things called life.

Reflect on letting go of these earthly things as you anticipate the day you are called home to Him.
