Prayer of Examen

Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV)
9  And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
10  so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,

Ever-Present God,

I seek to discern your voice and activity in the rapid pace of my day.  I long for a greater sense of your presence and the knowledge of what you desire for me in this day.

Help me to keep company with you today and be mindful of your presence in both the good and the difficult of this day.

Grant me the insight to see your hand at work in my experiences and feel your presence despite my changing emotions.

Aid me that I might develop that spiritual discipline to discern your voice amid the noise of this world and more importantly, touch me that I might be receptive to what you are saying to me and asking of me.

Forgive and deliver me from the temptation to imagine my spiritual knowledge is greater than others or the hypocrisy of pointing others to you and failing to submit myself to your sovereignty.

Foster in me a greater sense of gratitude for the blessings that you afford me and for the grace that you have shown to me.  Let me see those blessings that I have passed over or forgotten.

I am your work in progress and tend to focus on my shortcomings.  Enlarge my spiritual vision that I may also see those growing edges of my spiritual life that are tended by you.

Further your work within me so that among those selfish attitudes of my heart I might also discover good desires placed there by your Spirit.

All these things I seek from your hand and yet know that you will present yourself in such ways throughout my day.  Let me see your life in mine today.  Cast your light into my day and make all things clear to even me.  AMEN

Having prayed this prayer…

Review your day for those moments you were most thankful and for those moments your were least thankful.

Review your life for those relationships that are most life-giving to you and those relationships that are most life-thwarting.

Review your week for those moments when you felt most connected to the presence of God and those moments you felt the least sense of His presence.

Become aware of where your are living out the fruit of the Spirit and where there is a absence of those fruits.

Continue to ask God to reveal Himself to you by revealing yourself to Him.
